January 27th, 1945: International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
On this day 69 years ago, the Auschwitz Concentration Camp was liberated by Soviet Forces. Over the course of 5 years, more than 1 million Jews, Roma and Sinti, Soviet POWs, and homosexuals were killed at Auschwitz.The exact number is not known, as many documents were destroyed by the SS leading up to liberation, and many of its prisoners were not registered. Over the course of the Holocaust, all of the above groups, as well as the physically/ mentally disabled, transsexuals, political prisoners, and anyone else considered “subhuman” lost their lives, resulting in a death toll of about 6 million.
